Spring tempered 301 stainless steel strip is commonly used for springs manufacturing. To make tempered stainless steel spring 301 strip, the cold rolled stainless steel is heated to a point just below its upper critical temperature, between 1700° F and 1850° F. Then the material is rapidly quenched by immersion into liquid salt.

Traditional 301 (UNS 30100) stainless is used for most applications while 301Si (UNS 30116), with an increased Silicon content, is used for "super" high strength spring applications. Standard 301 has a silicon content of 1.0 max and 301Si increases that content to 1.0 - 1.35. The extra silicon allows for good ductility at higher tensile strength.

The most common type of spring steel is 1095, which has an ultimate tensile strength of 189 ksi (kilopound per square inch). This material is good at staying strong. It is suitable for any temperature, from -40°F to 400°F. 1075 Steel falls under the same category as 1095 but is not as strong as the former.
